Poll shows voters still distrust state government
By MATTHEW DONDIEGO
An overwhelming number of state voters say government corruption is a serious problem for New York, according to a poll released Thursday by Quinnipiac University.
The poll found 81 percent of voters feel corruption in New York state government, where a slew of legislators have faced corruption charges in recent years, is a "very serious" or "somewhat serious" issue. Worse still for a government that has done little to keep the public's trust, 55 percent of voters say that the state Legislature, famous for its political gridlock, is dysfunctional.
"An overwhelming majority of voters call government corruption a big New York problem," said Maurice Carroll, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll. "But we're jaded: 56 percent of voters say New York is about as corrupt as other states."
