A small reaction to a big charter expansion

Eliza Shapiro

After Success Academy C.E.O. Eva Moskowitz announced Tuesday that she is planning to expand her network of New York City charters to 46 serving over 11,000 students by 2016, Moskowitz's usual foes were unusually quiet.

A representative for public advocate Letitia James, who has led a lawsuit to reverse dozens of charter co-locations, many of them involving Success, declined to comment on Success' massive growth.

A spokeswoman for Daniel Dromm, the City Council education committee chair who recently called an oversight hearing inspired by Moskowitz's practices, and who has said charters promote "educational apartheid," also declined to comment.

Comptroller Scott Stringer, who accused Moskowitz of using "thug tactics" to open her schools in 2009, declined to comment as well.
