City Council passes bill to require demographic reports for charter schools sharing space with district schools

The city will be required to publish reports detailing the demographics and academic records of every charter school co-located with a traditional public school under a bill passed by the City Council Wednesday.

Officials will have to detail the number of kids who get free lunch, proportion of kids learning English and special education students, racial breakdown, and test scores at the charters compared to the district schools that host them.

Critics often charge that charters cherry pick their students and don’t serve enough kids with disabilities or those who don’t speak English well.
