NYU paying for 1199 members elsewhere

Laura Nahmias

ALBANY—N.Y.U. Langone Medical Center employees who belong to 1199 SEIU, the health care workers union, are subsidizing benefits for non-N.Y.U. employees under the current contract hospitals have with the union’s workers, a senior vice president of human resources for the hospital said in a memo obtained by Capital.

The vice president, Nancy Sanchez, circulated the memo to the medical center’s workers in advance of the union’s planned protest on Wednesday over ongoing contract talks.

1199 SEIU, one of the state’s most powerful unions, has a three-year master contract with the League of Voluntary Hospitals and Homes, which includes 109 hospitals, medical centers and nursing homes. That contract expires July 15 and the league and union are in talks over a new contract.

However, union leaders are unhappy with discussions they say could require some 55,000 home health care workers to pay for a part of their health care costs, the Daily News reported. Under the current contract, those employees don’t pay for their health care.
