MTA Prepares for Potential LIRR Strike With Commuter Parking Plan

By ANDREW TANGEL
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority took a step towards providing parking for commuters in case Long Island Rail Road employees go on strike in July.

The authority’s board is set to consider Wednesday whether to line up five parking areas for LIRR commuters who will need to carpool, drive to a subway stop or take shuttle buses if a labor dispute involving the railroad leads to a strike.

The plan, approved by an MTA committee on Monday, would cost $12,000 a day. The parking locations include lots at Citi Field, John F. Kennedy International Airport and Nassau Community College.

Negotiations between the MTA and the LIRR remain contentious and both sides are preparing for a possible strike as soon as July 20.
