Nonprofit Leader With Alleged Ties To Convicted Queens Pol Surrenders

The head of a Queens nonprofit tied to ex-State Senator Shirley Huntley turned himself into authorities this morning.

Van Holmes, the head of the Young Leaders Institute in Laurelton, is accused of misusing about $85,000 he received from the City Council and the State Senate.

Sources say instead of spending the cash on youth education programs, Holmes used it on himself, including paying for visits to a cabaret lounge.

His arrest stems from the indictment of former State Senator Shirley Huntley, who is headed to prison this month for stealing money from other Queens nonprofits.
