Port expected to approve free airport WiFi

Ryan Hutchins

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey is expected to approve a new deal that would give its airport users 30 minutes of free wireless internet access and improve connectivity.

The Port’s board of commissioners will vote on the new contract with Boingo Wireless at its Wednesday afternoon meeting. No one objected to the contract when it was outlined by staff members in a morning committee meeting.

“I think this is a very good idea and I fully support it,” Commissioner Pat Schuber said. “Even though it’s a modest beginning, it’s a good beginning.”

The contract would apply to John F. Kennedy International, Newark Liberty International, LaGuardia and Stewart airports. It requires the company to invest about $3.8 million in expanding access and providing high-speed connections. The airports currently offer 3 Mbps connections but would be able offer 5 Mbps after upgrades, Port staff said.
