Con Ed pushes demand-sensitive air conditioners

David Giambusso

Con Edison is offering two programs to help reduce one of the biggest burdens on the New York City electrical grid each summer: air conditioning.

The utility, which delivers electricity to the city and Westchester, is offering a $25 rebate for anyone who purchases an Energy Star efficient window air conditioner between now and Aug. 29. It will also offer free "smartAC" kits that allow residents to control their air conditioning remotely, using a smartphone.

The catch: with the smart kits, Con Ed can control the AC, too.
