CNSE to split from UAlbany and become first SUNY campus in over 40 years
By DAN MOSHER
The State University of New York Board of Trustees approved a measure to split the College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering (CNSE) from the University at Albany, making CNSE the 65th campus in the SUNY system, and the first new campus in over 42 years.
The recommendation to split came from a SUNY working group's report detailing the ability of CNSE to operate even more successfully as its own separate degree-granting institution. The board overwhelmingly approved the measure but only after trustees expressed their concerns or support for the separation of the two campuses.
One trustee, Cary Staller, said Tuesday's 13-3 vote by the board is only the next step in the inevitable complete separation between CNSE and the SUNY system.
"If we approve the resolution," Staller said, "I think we will lose control of the process and the ultimate structure will be determined by the senior leaders of CNSE."
