De Blasio deputy ‘looking very closely’ at plastic bag fee

Dana Rubinstein

Deputy mayor, can you tell us if the mayor would sign a plastic shopping bag ban or fee if the City Council were to pass one?" WNYC host Brian Lehrer asked Mayor Bill de Blasio's top deputy mayor, Tony Shorris, this morning.

"Look, we’re looking very closely at it, Brian," Shorris responded. "It is something the direction of which we’re very supportive of."

Former mayor Michael Bloomberg tried to institute a 6 cent fee, and failed. Since last year, sponsors in the City Council have been trying to pass a similar bill that would institute a 10 cent levy on plastic shopping bags.

on the Central Coast of CA. Just returned from Hawaii were there were no plastic bags and fees for paper. You learn to carry your reusable bags in the car. Not really a problem.
