Plurality of voters want to halt Common Core curriculum
By Hannah Nesich
Nearly half of New York state voters want the implementation of Common Core curriculum to be stopped, according to the latest Siena Research Institute poll.
The poll, released July 21, shows 39 percent of New York voters think Common Core standards should continue to be upheld, while 49 percent prefer implementation of the curriculum be halted.
Liberals and moderates remain closely divided on the issue overall, while 60 percent of Conservatives want to end implementation of Common Core. These proportions are reflected in how voters also support the two most prominent gubernatorial candidates, Democrat Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Republican Rob Astorino.
"Voters supporting Cuomo want the standards implemented by a 49-38 percent margin," Siena pollster Steven Greenberg said. "However, Astorino voters are strongly opposed to Common Core being implemented by a 73-17 percent margin."
