Smells like amenity

Looking up from his canoe on a recent weekday afternoon, Owen Foote called out to the older woman on the bridge: “Ahoy!”

She looked down at the water as if she wasn’t quite sure what was happening.

Walking past the Gowanus Canal, you usually don’t see much in the murky water. Maybe some unidentifiable bit of shaggy something. Or a dead rat. Or, on occasion, a particularly resilient piece of excrement.

“I’ve never seen anyone on that water before,” she said, bemused.
