Westchester asks for EPA approval of plan for UV water treatment

Elizabeth Ganga

Westchester County has sent a letter to the Environmental Protection Agency asking for approval of its plan to bring Water District 1 into compliance with ultraviolet treatment requirements for drinking water.

The county missed a 2012 deadline to bring White Plains and Scarsdale, two of the four towns in the district, into compliance and has been scrambling to fix the problem after being sued by the EPA. UV light kills cryptosporidium and the treatment is required for drinking water from surface sources such as reservoirs.

The Board of Legislators has refused to bond the money for the $10 million project without assurances that the county will not be required to take more extensive steps later costing millions more.
