At a quarter of New York City schools most students unable to perform at grade level: report

BY BEN CHAPMAN , STEPHEN REX BROWN

At nearly one-quarter of city schools, 90% of students fail to read or do math at grade level, according to a new report based on last year’s state math and reading exams.

The advocacy group Research by the Families For Excellent Schools dubbed the struggling 371 schools with declining enrollment “The Forgotten Fourth.”

“Our city is facing a K-12 schools crisis of epic proportions,” said Jeremiah Kittredge, CEO of Families for Excellent Schools, which has close ties to the charter school industry.
