State Begins Estate Tax Refunds For Same-Sex Spouses

Same-sex spouses who paid estate taxes after the death of their partners will be getting refunds on the state portion of their tax.

Governor Andrew Cuomo says the refunds are being issued because the Supreme Court struck down a section of the Defense of Marriage Act.

In declaring that part unconstitutional, the court granted gay couples the same rights to assets and lower taxes as straight couples.

Same-sex spouses may have been required to pay thousands of dollars more in New York estate taxes when their partner died.
