Manhattan nurse-staffing dispute could signal more to come

Dan Goldberg

Management at Terence Cardinal Cooke Health Care in Manhattan says it is not concerned about a possible one-day strike by 90 nurses because it would have “a negligible effect on operations.”

The nurses, members of the New York State Nurses Association, are protesting staffing levels, which they say are too low and unsafe, and have given their 10-day notice for a 24-hour strike to begin at 7 a.m. August 15.

Their last contract expired in December and the two sides have been meeting without progress since March, said Jon Goldberg, spokesman for T.C.C., which is owned and operated by ArchCare, also known as Catholic Health Care System.

“T.C.C. is part of a large and diverse health system and has more than adequate resources at its disposal to address the job action,” Goldberg said in an email.
