1st section of Long Beach boardwalk reopens after Superstorm Sandy

LONG BEACH (WABC) -- A Long Island beach town took a major step forward Friday on the road to recovery after Superstorm Sandy.

The first section of the Long Beach boardwalk reopened to residents and visitors for the first time in almost nine months.

The boardwalk stretches 2.2 miles, but only the middle section, 4/5 of a mile, has been rebuilt so far.

Brazilian tropical hardwood was used, which means the new construction has a 30- to 40-year lifespan. The previous wood used only lasted 3 to 7 years.
