Ulster County lawmakers advance rail trail plan

Patricia Doxsey

KINGSTON >> Ulster County lawmakers have moved forward a measure that would establish as county policy the creation of a rail trail along the Ulster & Delaware railroad corridor.

But Legislature Minority Leader Ken Ronk is looking to amend the measure when it comes to the floor of the Legislature later this month to keep open the possibility of a tourist train running on the tracks out of Kingston.

Members of the Legislature’s Economic Development, Tourism, Housing, Planning and Transit Committee this week unanimously approved a resolution sponsored by Legislator Lynn Archer to establish as policy the “segmented trail and rail” plan championed by County Executive Michael Hein that calls for a walking trail from Kingston to the western side of the Ashokan Reservoir.
