Interior takes 13,004 acres of Oneida lands into trust
DAN GUZEWICH
VERONA The U.S. Interior Department has taken 13,004 acres of Oneida Indian Nation land into trust on behalf of the nation.
The transfer includes some 8,750 acres in Oneida County, mostly in the towns of Verona and Vernon.
The action completes a process that began in 2005 following a U.S. Supreme Court ruling that went against the Oneidas.

During the last legislative session, lawmakers said no to a proposal that would have permitted prison inmates to get a free college education while behind bars. But for more than two decades, New York state has been paying to show feature films to prison inmates.
This month, state Comptroller Tom DiNapoli signed off on the latest contract with St. Louis-based Swank Motion Pictures for approximately $894,000. The contract through March 31, 2019 lets the prison system license feature films that can be viewed by eligible prison inmates.
The previous contract, for approximately $1 million, ran from 2009 to this year.

What in the world is happening in Lansingburgh?
The Troy neighborhood, once the picture of blue-collar stability, has been wracked this summer by arson, shooting and murder including last week's gruesome killing of Al and Maria Lockrow, bludgeoned to death in their First Avenue home.
It's been a summer of fear and violence in Lansingburgh, just as it has been a particularly savage year citywide.

I received a call from Gov. Cuomos communication director, Gareth Rhodes, on Friday morning regarding my invite to the Governors Challenge a fishing competition that along with members of the media, included 15 Bassmaster Elite Series Tournament fishing pros and, of course, state and local politicians.
Held Saturday on Owasco Lake (Cayuga County), the so-called Challenge was designed to highlight and promote fishing and vacationing opportunities in upstate New York in this case, the Finger Lakes.

ARGYLE -- If the new owners of the former Covidien medical device manufacturing plant on Route 40 get their way, the property will soon be home to several new and growing small- to medium-sized businesses.
The investment group behind the $422,000 purchase of the 85,000-square-foot plant is called The Noah Project LLC, a nod to a comedy routine by Bill Cosby, according to Marge Randles, a member of the investment group.
