Cuomo: Calling debates a “disservice to democracy” was a joke

Gov. Andrew Cuomo said yesterday that when he said last Tuesday that debates can be a “disservice to democracy,” he was making a joke that he’s been in some debates with some “real characters.”

Cuomo was criticized this week when he brushed off reporters’ questions about why he wouldn’t debate Democratic primary foe Zephyr Teachout in advance of Tuesday’s primary.
