Cuomo ads pounce on Astorino's gun hugging

Cuomo, Astorino trade barbs over SAFE Act

Republican Rob Astorino has made his opposition to the state's gun-control laws a key plank of his campaign, hoping to build support among gun-rights groups.

But in recent days, Gov. Andrew Cuomo has released a flurry of ads knocking Astorino for an "ultraconservative" gun stance.

"Rob Astorino supports bringing guns into schools and teaching students to shoot," one mailer reads. The front of the mailer shows a school hallway with the message: "There's a gun down this hallway."

...Democrats are seizing on Astorino's comments in August in Sullivan County to gun groups. He told the group that he supports their effort to have a marksmanship program in the local schools, and one supporter said she thought the program could help children with discipline problems, Time Warner Cable reported at the time.

"As mandated by the Westchester County Handgun Record-Keeping Accountability Act, all current pistol licenses must be recertified with the Westchester County Clerk every five years."

They call it record keeping there and you pay a fee for it.

Which is a big issue with the huggers upstate, as you know. His own cynicism on guns is being handed right back to him.

class in schools. Especially in rural areas like Sullivan County. As an elective class, of course...not a required class.
