There will be a special election in November because Tom Libous was forced to vacate his NY Senate seat when he was convicted of a felony. It would be a great thing if Democrats could win NY's Senate and turn the tide in Albany because the Republican leadership in the 52nd district has been an economic disaster for the people living here.
Running for the Democrats is Barbara Fiala against Republican Good 'ol Boy Fred Akshar. Fiala is already getting hit by untrue, anonymous attack ads.

Please show Fiala your support by liking her Facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/fialaforsenate?fref=ts
Thanks!

(1,603 posts)Don't they realize that republicans are mostly anti-union? If the are doing this to rebuke Cuomo, they are cutting off their nose to spite their face.

(74 posts)Cuomo is just as anti-Union as any Republican. I wouldn't vote or support anyone in the Dark Prince's camp either. But, Cuomo actually may have endorsed her because she is a bad candidate and he expects her to lose. The last thing Cuomo wants right now is a Democratically controlled Senate. Then he loses the foil and will have to pursue a more progressive agenda, and that is anathema to him as he collects money from Wall Street and the 1% because he still thinks he'll be President down the road.

(1,603 posts)I know her and she is most certainly not a Cuomo puppet. Cuomo chose her because she is the most recognized Democratic name in the district and not some lame conspiracy to lose the senate.

Gov. Cuomos fantastic candidate in the important Nov. 3 special state Senate election will be crushed by her Republican opponent because Cuomo reneged on his pledge to go all out to help, senior Democrats have told The Post.
Cuomos great candidate, Barbara Fiala, is going to get crushed on Election Day, and we all know why he hardly lifted a finger, said a prominent Democratic strategist, referring to Cuomos former Motor Vehicles commissioner, whom the governor picked in July to run for the Binghamton-area seat left vacant by the corruption conviction of Deputy Senate Majority Leader Tom Libous, a
Republican.
-snip-
Cuomos selection of Fiala who he claimed would be fantastic as a candidate was widely seen as significant because of the widespread view among Democrats that the governor has worked for years to keep the GOP in control of the Senate in order to strengthen his overall control of the Legislature.
Senate Democrats had been told to expect Cuomo to raise at least $100,000 for Fialas campaign a drop in the bucket for Cuomos cash-rich campaign machine but as of the weekend, nothing approaching that amount had arrived, a source close to the campaign said.
-snip-
Fialas clueless and underfunded campaign is clearly part of a deal between Cuomo, Senate Majority Leader John Flanagan [R-Suffolk] and the GOP senators to protect the former Libous seat, said Nojay, who has watched the special Senate race closely.
This is consistent with Cuomos strategy going back to 2011-2012 with the redistricting deals that ensure GOP control of the Senate in exchange for GOP senators rolling over on key Cuomo initiatives such as the 2012 tax hikes, gay marriage, the SAFE [gun-control] Act, and budget deals.
When are the NY Dems who keep this guy in office going to realize that the Emperor wears no clothes?

(1,603 posts)She knows she's going to lose which is unfortunate because Akshart is a slimeball who has done some very questionable and probably illegal things in his past like taking part in the tampering with a crime scene:

It's sad that the 52nd's media isn't looking more into this. It looks like he should have been charged.

Fiala is Gov. Andrew Cuomos handpicked candidate (the governor alluded to a possible run by his former DMV commissioner in a radio interview this summer, and Fiala unsurprisingly announced shortly thereafter). For what its worth, voters districtwide give the governor a negative 38-59 favorable-unfavorable rating. Interestingly, while Fiala supporters give the governor a 63-34 favorable-unfavorable number, Democrats as a whole are a bit more split, giving Cuomo a 55-42 favorable-unfavorable rating.
The Daily News reported this week that Cuomo is trying to help Fiala raise $100,000 for her bid, though the next round of financial filings will show if that type of money can make a significant dent in Akshars lead.

Dems in the North Country run from Cuomo. He has killed the Democratic Party's chances upstate.

(1,603 posts)Contributions to Akshar's campaign to date are $425,044.49. Most of it is from various GOP PACs and other special interest groups.
For a state senate race it's a disgusting amount of money. It's very sad to see the Repukes buying this election.
