Paul McCartney performs surprise concert in Times Square

TIMES SQUARE (WABC) -- Paul McCartney performed a surprise concert in Times Square Thursday afternoon to promote his new album, "New".

McCartney and his band took the stage at Broadway and 46th Street, after putting out word of the concert on Twitter.

Half a century after he first landed in New York with the Beatles, the 71-year old Sir Paul proved he can still draw a big crowd on short notice.

The concert came one day after McCartney performed at the Frank Sinatra School of the Arts in Queens, the day he celebrated his second anniversary with his wife Nancy Shevell.

"Instant Karma " from Midnight Oil's impromptu protest concert in front of Exxon in NYC.

By dumb luck, girlfriend (now wife) and I were there, pretty close to the band. For Sir Paul this year, we had to settle for Fenway.

Sir Paul is astonishingly talented - I feel really lucky just to have been alive while he's been with us!

He's also got me trying to become more vegetarian-ish. I couldn't believe the energy he had when we saw him at Fenway, and also at the Sandy concert. Must be his diet. Or the weed. Hey, maybe I should...

for young daughter, Bea. He didn't quit for his other kids, so I suspect it's his new Republican wife, Nancy Shevell he did it for. But, who knows. He does like to move forward in life.

Also, the veggie diet didn't do much for his first wife. And Macca himself had an angioplasty in 2007. But he does seem healthy now. Saw him in Brooklyn in June and he had more energy than either me and my 15 year-old niece put together!

Astonishingly talented? Truer words were never spoken! Did you see him on the Colbert Report in June? Colbert sang with him and was obviously blown away. So much better than their first Colbert Report meet-up!

There are so many clues and references in Beatles songs if you just play them backwards.
