PSC moves forward with Indian Point contingency plans

ALBANY – The State Public Services Commission approved a number of projects to foster grid reliability in the event that the Indian Point nuclear power plant operating licenses are not renewed. The governor had called on the agency to develop the contingency plans. The PSC last year directed Consolidated Edison to work with the New York Power Authority to develop a contingency plan to address reliability needs in the event the plants shut down.

The plans accepted by the commission on Thursday include three transmission projects capable of reducing capacity needs by more than 600 MW and extension of existing programs and creation of new programs designed to reduce downstate electricity use by 180 MW through energy efficiency and demand response.
