US DOT awards over $880 million to MTA for Sandy recovery

WASHINGTON – US Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx personally told MTA officials on Friday his agency was awarding the New York City transportation system $886 million for ongoing Hurricane Sandy recovery work.

The storm devastated peoples’ homes and businesses, noted Foxx.

“It also triggered the worst public transit disaster in American history,” Foxx said. “The region in Sandy’s path accounted for more trips taken via transit than any other in the country.”

Foxx said this is money already pledged and was not being released.
