Keller leaves New York Times for nonprofit

Matthew Lynch

New York Times columnist and former executive editor Bill Keller is leaving the paper to become the editor in chief of a nonprofit journalism startup dedicated to covering criminal justice.

After a three-decade career at the Times, Keller, 65, is assuming his new leadership post at The Marshall Project in March.

“It’s a chance to build something from scratch, which I’ve never done before, and to use all the tools that digital technology offers journalists in terms of ways to investigate and to present on a subject that really matters personally,” Keller told the Times' Ravi Somaiya on Sunday.
