Army Corps to dredge Oswego Harbor on Lake Ontario

OSWEGO, N.Y. (AP) — The Army Corps of Engineers has agreed to dredge Oswego Harbor.

U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer says the long-overdue project is expected to get underway in June and take about one month to complete.

Army officials say more than 72,000 cubic yards of sediment must be dredged from the harbor every three to four years, but the Lake Ontario port hasn't had its sediment dredged since 2008.

The project will be paid for with $786,000 approved by Congress for the recovery from Hurricane Sandy, which caused storm damage at the port.

ROCHESTER (AP) >> The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has set aside more than $2.5 million for a pair of Lake Ontario dredging projects in the Rochester area.

Congresswoman Louise Slaughter of Rochester announced Tuesday that $2.2 million will be used to dredge the Port of Rochester, while another $350,000 go toward dredging nearby Irondequoit Bay outlet.

That’s in addition to the more than $1.6 million in emergency relief funding that the Corps had said it would use to partly dredge the two sites by removing silt that built up in the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy in October 2012.

Dredging at both sites is scheduled to start this summer.
