McLaughlin on church’s gun giveaway: ‘I’ve got CNN calling me’

Rick Karlin, Capitol bureau

It’s hard to imagine the organizers of this event wouldn’t have thought that it would lead to at least some headlines, but GOP Assemblyman Steve McLaughlin said he’s marveling at the growing interest in the upcoming raffle of an assault-style rifle at a church in his district.

“This did not warrant a front-page story,” he told Talk 1300?s Fred Dicker on Friday morning. “Now I’ve got CNN calling me.”

The Times Union featured the upcoming raffle in Thursday’s paper, and the Daily News picked up on it it for Friday’s editions.

To recap: McLaughlin has agreed to speak at the March 23 event at the Grace Baptist Church in Troy’s Lansingburgh neighborhood. Pastor John Koletas said he was planning the free raffle as way of “honoring hunters and gun owners who have been so viciously attacked by the antichristian socialist media and antichristian socialist politicians the last few years,” according to a letter on his website.
