Cuomo touts tribal deal for casino money
James M. Odato
After last weeks federal court support for his deal with the Oneida Indian Nation, Gov. Andrew Cuomo took a victory tour on the telephone on Tuesday.
Speaking with reporters in a joint press conference with two county leaders and Oneida Representative Ray Halbritter, Cuomo said the deal came about after very difficult negotiations but represents an end to unfruitful disputes among the tribe, neighboring counties and the state.
It also resulted in the tribe providing a $11 million check which will be a one-time payment to Oneida County as part of a casino revenue sharing deal that will benefit Oneida and Madison counties annually as well as the state of New York.
New York will get 25 percent of the tribes Turning Stone casino slot machines annually, which should be good for millions of dollars to the state treasury.
