Owego village mayor race heats up

Jason Whong

VILLAGE OF OWEGO — Mayor Kevin Millar faces a challenge from a local business owner for the office he currently holds in the March 18 village election.

Millar is seeking re-election to a two-year term on the “Rebuild Owego Party” line. Lisa Curatolo, owner of The Goat Boy, is challenging him on the “A Positive Change Party” line. Owego’s mayorship is a part-time job that pays $5,000 annually.

Traditionally in the village, candidates do not run on mainstream party lines. Millar is registered as a Democrat, while Curatolo’s voting registration is unaffiliated with a party, according to Tioga County Board of Elections records.

Millar, 67, who was elected in 2012, is running for a second term because he sees work that still needs to be done toward the village’s recovery from the September 2011 flood.
