FDNY commissioner explains new response-time calculation

Azi Paybarah
It takes a little over nine minutes on average for an ambulance to reach someone in a life-threatening emergency, according to the latest figures from city officials, using a new method of calculating that figure.

“We never were able to calculate end-to-end response times,” fire department commissioner Sal Cassano, who revealed the figure during a budget hearing at City Hall this morning, told reporters. “This hasn’t gone up dramatically from 6:28 to 9:22 in a year.”

He was referring to the prior response time, which was measured from the time the emergency was logged into the city’s database, not, as it is now, when the emergency call is received.
