Longtime Sanitation Commissioner John Doherty almost quit after 2010 blizzard

LISA L. COLANGELO

Five decades of dealing with trash and snow helped longtime Sanitation Commissioner John Doherty develop a thick skin.

But Doherty said he was so disheartened after New Yorkers criticized his department's handling of the paralyzing Blizzard of 2010, he almost quit.

"It was probably the only time in my career I really thought about resigning," Doherty, 75, told the News in a wide-ranging interview as he prepared to retire last Friday. "But I decided that was taking the easy way out."
