Anniversary 2013 Guest Speakers

Lawrence S. Earley is a Raleigh resident who worked for 20 years with the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission, where he served as editor of "Wildlife in North Carolina" and directed the Wildlife Commission's educational publications unit. A freelance writer and photographer for more than 35 years, his images have been exhibited widely in North Carolina.

In his book entitled "Looking for Longleaf: The Fall and Rise of an American Forest," Earley explores the history of the longleaf pine forests. With their rich stores of resin, the forests of the longleaf became the world's greatest source of tar, pitch, turpentine, and rosin, sustaining the exploitative naval stores and lumber industries until nearly all of the virgin longleaf had vanished. Earley suggests that halting its decline has been the most intractable forest issue in American conservation history.

Gary E. Trawick is a native of Pender County. He served in the private practice of law for 26 years. In 1999, he was appointed a Special Superior Court Judge by Governor James Hunt, Jr., and has been reappointed to that position by Governor's Easley and Perdue. He presently continues to serve the people of North Carolina in that position, having presided in eighty-seven of the state's counties.

Gary E. Trawick is the author of the newly released book entitled "Born in Reconstruction: The Story of Pender County, 1524-2012." Having resided in Pender County his entire life, Trawick taps into his heritage as he shares the stories surrounding the history of Pender County. The book describes the county's history as it relates to everything from the settlement of the area by Native Americans to the county's involvement in WWII and the historic floods that have shaped the local communities
