$25M roof repair needed on historic Asheville High

Last edited Fri Jun 3, 2016, 03:16 AM - Edit history (1)

ASHEVILLE - One of the city's architectural gems that also serves as school for 1,500 students is in need of an immediate $25 million roof repair, officials have said.

Asheville High, built in 1927 and designed by the city's most famous architect, Douglas Ellington, is experiencing water damage and needs its entire main roof replaced, Asheville City Schools Superintendent Pamela Baldwin said Tuesday.

"I think we have done as much as we can do in the form of patchwork," Baldwin told commissioners. "Because we have so much internal leaking at this point it will be very difficult to stop any other leaking with patchwork."

My grandmother retired to Black Mountain, NC, so I got to spend a lot of time in the area.

I lost my grandmother a few years back (at 97!) so I kind of gave up my excuse to visit there - and I miss it!

High - was called Lee Edwards then. It was dilapidated way back then.

Obviously a building of that age would need substantial renovations for electrical repairs to accomodate new technology such as computers and Internet access. However, it would be a shame to see the building unused.
