'Damaged goods': Alleged fraud has GOP bracing for loss of N.C. seat

Dan McCready had just returned home from a trip to Disney World with his wife and four kids when he received the news: The North Carolina Board of Elections declined to certify his narrow election loss, and his campaign for the House — which he had conceded weeks earlier — wasn’t over.

Now, with a special election in response to alleged voter fraud looking increasingly likely, the ex-Marine is scrambling to reassemble his campaign. And McCready, who’s currently trailing Republican victor Mark Harris by 905 votes, would have the inside track, political operatives from both parties say.

Privately, national and state Republicans acknowledged that Harris, who denied in a statement Friday that he had any knowledge of illegal activity, would be a toxic candidate.

Some Republicans in the state are holding out hope that Harris could be replaced on the ballot, which would require intervention from a Democrat-controlled House of Representatives. But if the state board votes to rerun the election, the only way for Harris to be removed from the ballot would be if he moved out of state, according to Gerry Cohen, who formerly served as special counsel to the North Carolina General Assembly.

I wonder if this wasn't more widespread throughout the country, not just in NC. It was the same there in 2016.

My guess is this was the full on roll out. This did not happen in a Vacuum. This had some big time organization and the smell is getting intense.

People are going to be fired up to vote AGAINST him, and a lot of Republicans are going to stay home.

That daydream dictator would just install Harris by decree, like they do in the third world sometimes.

During the campaign season, Dowless worked for the political consulting firm Red Dome, which the Harris campaign paid $428,000 this past cycle.

In a sworn affidavit submitted to the North Carolina state elections board, which is investigating the irregularities in the mail-in absentee ballots, one person described overhearing Dowless say he would receive a $40,000 bonus if Harris won.

Harris, a Baptist minister, defeated Democrat Dan McCready by 905 votes in the unofficial vote count.

Not denying your info re Kissinger, but asking for info on the source of your info, please! Read it in a book? Tv special? Ken Burns thing?

Please advise, as I would really enjoy knowing more about this. TIA!

http://movies2.nytimes.com/books/00/10/08/reviews/001008.08hitchet.html (it's been mentioned many more times since)

In his book that year, he mentioned suspecting that one of the directives of Nixon's burglars during the famed 1972 DNC break-in was to look for any evidence Democrats may have uncovered of the Kissinger/Anna Chenault bribery of Saigon officials to boycott LBJ's Paris Peace talks.

Nicon was convinced the McGovern campaign had been looking for said evidence, and that they could have been in a position to reveal it in, say, October.

Republicans, as you know, love giving October surprises; but not getting them.

As it happened, the DNC had no such dirt (unfortunately) - but the break-in, of course, resulted in Nixon's own downfall.

Karma is a dick.

I just noticed Rachel Maddow made a killer documentary on this recently:

Prof. Maddow, as always, gives the story the definitive treatment. I should've seen it sooner.

Here's hoping a revote is allowed to take place - not only for McCready or Democrats in general; but because a remedy like that give may just make GOP miscreants think twice before they steal future elections.
