Portland Marathon in jeopardy as city denies event permit

The Portland Marathon is in jeopardy after the City of Portland denied the event a permit for the 46th annual run in October.

The dispute stems from the planned route for the marathon, which the Portland Bureau of Transportation says must change to accommodate the Portland police staffing shortage.

The Portland Police Bureau has struggled to fill vacant positions in the force since 2015, resulting in a critical shortage of officers.

Event director Les Smith has declined to change the race route.
