Federal judge orders Oregon to immediately offer COVID-19 vaccine to inmates
A federal judge has ordered Oregon to immediately offer COVID-19 vaccinations to inmates in state prisons.
U.S. Magistrate Judge Stacie Beckerman's order Tuesday effectively moves the state's nearly-13,000 inmates housed in the state's 14 prisons to the top of the list among those currently eligible to get the vaccine, as first reported by Oregon Public Broadcasting.
Others in Phase 1A group 2 of Oregon's COVID-19 vaccination plan include people in long-term care facilities, hospice, and those working in a correctional setting.
Beckman's order follows a lawsuit filed in April by seven inmates in the Oregon Department of Corrections criticizing the state over its response to the coronavirus pandemic.
