http://www.philly.com/philly/news/pennsylvania/20120530_Amid_red_ink_in_Pa__budget__support_seen_for_green_pastures.htmlFortunately, many members of the PA. legislature are hesitant to go along with his dastardly plans. If only our Governor could use his stupidity for good instead of evil.
excerpt from today's Phila. Inquirer article:
"In the $27.1 billion budget he proposed in February, Gov. Corbett called for transferring a total of $69 million from the farmland preservation program and the Keystone Recreation, Parks and Conservation Fund into the states general fund to help cover shortfalls driven by the recession.
From those who see those two programs as critical to protecting open land in all corners of the state, reaction was swift. A coalition was formed representing a wide swath of interest groups, environmentalists, land trusts, and recreation enthusiasts, who said residents reap the benefits of the funds every day as new trails are developed along waterways or large tracts of farmland preserved in places such as Lancaster County, home to the richest nonirrigated soil in the nation.
"Not only do I want full funding restored in parks and farmland, I dont want the governor to think he can take dedicated funding and put it in the general fund," State Rep. Kate Harper (R., Montgomery) said Tuesday.
At the same time, Stoll cautioned that nothing is final until the governor signs the legislation, which some are predicting could come early this year since the Senate has already offered its broad outline of a budget proposal. The Senate version restores $19 million or half of the Keystone programs funding but retains the governors two-year plan to defund the separate farmland preservation program."

(446 posts)There may be some things in parks and recreation that could be cut without hurting the majority of the general public. New trails along waterways, for example. But there are things that should not be cut; things that would hurt the environment that would hurt the health of everybody.
I never agreed with a republican more than this Kate Harper: "Not only do I want full funding restored in parks and farmland, I dont want the governor to think he can take dedicated funding and put it in the general fund."
Don't even get me started on replacing local family-owned farms with cruel, unhealthy factory farming of Big Agriculture.
Impeach!

(95,337 posts)Asked about the role of the Attorney Generals Office stemming from a 1998 investigation of former Penn State assistant coach Jerry Sandusky conducted by former Centre County District Attorney Ray Gricar, Kane said her first order of business would be to conduct an investigation to see what the office then held by current Governor Tom Corbett knew.
If the Attorney Generals Office is at fault in any way for not bringing charges against Jerry Sandusky earlier, our investigation will uncover it and ensure it never happens again, Kane said.

(6,819 posts)In response to a comment above, large areas of State Game Lands and State Forest Lands have already been opened up for fracking.
The only thing that has been safe so far are the State Parks, but give Corbett another year and they will fall too. He already told the state universities they should frack their campuses to make up for his 20 to 25% budget cuts from last year.
Also, the courts have forced the Federal Forest Service to open up much of the Allegheny National Forest to fracking, with little ability to control the impacts, if someone can claim they are the heir to the person who owned the mineral rights from the 1800s.
However, the gas industry has over-expanded too quickly, the wholesale prices have fallen too much, so most new wells are on hold. Otherwise, we would all be fracked.

(95,337 posts)He was a surveyor for the PA State Game Commission and spent his time surveying maps of those state game lands. I can't believe Corbett is destroying what is so beautiful about Pennsylvania. Hell let's just put a giant oil well in the middle of the PA Grand Canyon
At least our Governor here in Delaware has stopped Corbett from fracking in or near the Delaware River. Corbett can't frack there unless the governors of all states that border it agree to it. Markell veto'd it because he knew the Delaware River was a serious source of our drinking water in our state.

(6,819 posts)The State Game Commission actually sent a warning out to hunters that they may not recognize their regular hunting grounds this year because of all the drilling and tree removal that has recently occurred.
The Governors of Delaware and New York have voted against allowing the massive water use that is needed in order to do fracking in the Delaware River watershed. It is under the authority of the Delaware River Basin Commission. PA and NJ voted for allowing the fracking. The deciding vote is held by the US Army Corps of Engineers, who have hesitated for the last year to break the tie.
New York State, Vermont and some other states have completely prohibited fracking. Meanwhile, fracking is full speed ahead in PA, Ohio, N. Dakota, W. Va. and Texas.
