Tom Corbett, Pennsylvania Governor, Sinks To 36 Percent Approval Amid Austerity MeasuresPennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett's cuts to education funding and proposed credits for chemical refiners has sent his approval rating into a swoon. Just 36 percent of Pennsylvanians approved of the Republican governor's job performance this month, down from his all-time high of 50 percent in September, according to a Quinnipiac University poll.
Corbett supports a tax credit for chemical refiners that would cost his state more than $1.7 billion over 25 years starting in 2017. At the same time, he has cut $1 billion in funding to public schools and universities.
Democrats are capitalizing on growing discontent. Weve already given away the store to the Marcellus Shale industry," state Rep. Phyllis Mundy (D-Luzerne County) told the Herald-Mail. "Now were proposing to give away billions of tax dollars?

(44,173 posts)We only have to wait 2 1/2 years for the next election and hope that he stays unpopular.
And no incumbent has been defeated for Pennsylvania governor since, when? Well, it's been a long time.
Lot of good that 36% rating does us now.

(28,394 posts)Before Milton Shapp, the governor's office was limited to one-term only.
Since Shapp, we have had: Thornburg, Casey, Ridge/Schweiker*, Rendell and now Corbett.
*(Ridge left to serve as Sec. of Homeland Security in his second term and Schweiker became governor, but did not run for his own term.)

(18,219 posts)It may be too too long before we can get rid of him, but if he keeps the independents in PA pissed off with him, it could look better for Obama in this November's election. They will have had their fill of idiot Republicans. So although we are stuck with him, PA may go for Obama without a problem. Crossing fingers here. I hope I'm right.

(17,216 posts)Seen it in poll after poll. Just yesterday -- 64% approve the President on the Dream act, leaving that same 1/3 who need to have their heads extracted from a tight, dark place.
As for Corbett -- his all-time approval rating is 50%? Makes you wonder how he got elected.

(6,819 posts)Compared to Corbett, the Republican leadership of the House and Senate ended up being relatively moderate. They forced Corbett to accept no further cuts in college funding, and a slightly higher amount of public school funding vs. what Corbett has insisted upon.
The Democrats were never allowed in the room where the budget deal was made, and only know what we read in the newspapers.
