PITTSBURGH -- The Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is fining Halliburton Energy Services $1.8 million for 255 violations of the Solid Waste Management Act between 1999 and 2011.
DEP became aware of the violations in 2011 during an inspection of the facility, and further investigation revealed violations dating back to 1999.
Am I correct that the math means it only cost Halliburton a little over $7k to violate the law each time? That must be a drop in the bucket...

OP
enough
(13,259 posts)1. True, the story here is the pathetic lack of teeth of enforcement.
Halliburton spent more than that taking DEP officials to lunch during the same time period.
Curmudgeoness
(18,219 posts)2. I was just coming to see if anyone else had posted this yet.
I am so disgusted that I could chew nails. The arrogance and total disregard for the law and the citizens of PA infuriates me. You are right, this is just over $7,000 per violation. God damn it.
Also from the news release:
During the 12-year time period, Halliburton transported acidic waste, which had originated from various gas well sites, without identifying the waste as hazardous waste, without proper hazardous waste trucking records, and without using a licensed hazardous waste transporter. In addition, the company sent the hazardous waste to an unauthorized treatment and disposal operation.
Those sons of bitches!
