Piano teacher who overturned PA. Repub. Redistricting Plan appointed as deciding vote in Lehigh Co.

After the 2010 Census, a republican controlled committee set up severely gerrymandered new districts for the PA. legislature. The goal was to ensure a permanent Republican majority of both houses by ghettoizing all of the Dems and minority voters into a few districts.

Up to the plate stepped a young piano teacher with little relevant experience or training for the task. She drew a new redistricting map that showed how easy it was to meet the requirements of PA. law for redistricting in a fair way, and that showed how the Republican plan violated those laws. That map was critical in convincing the Republican Chief Justice of the PA. Supreme Court to cast the deciding vote to throw out the redistricting plan.

A new plan was eventually approved that was less worse.

Now that young woman has just been appointed to an open seat on the Lehigh County Commissioners. That would normally not be big news, but she is deciding vote on the board. Lehigh County came within a relatively few votes of being completely taken over by a gang of radical teabaggers who were all funded by a single rich woman.

This gang of County Commissioners was so radical that they actually tried to prevent the local Meals on Wheels from receiving a federal grant, solely because of their ideology.

Instead, a moderate Republican-turned Democrat won the County Executive race, the ringleader of the cabal moved to Texas.

Update - At first, I thought this appointment was a positive development, but now I understand that she was an active volunteer for the leader of the teabaggers, and that they may have picked an inexperienced person with little formal education who they thought they could control.

(By the way, Lehigh County is a fast-growing county of 360,000 people that includes Allentown)

I wonder how she swung it, since it was an appointment. Had it been an election, would she have gotten party support, or would the Dems have given up the struggle before it began as hopeless?

And very glad to have heard it. The insanity was coming to...well, the county I live in very shortly if this didn't get defused.

Fortunately, Lehigh County occasionally flirts with insanity but generally sees sense before it goes all the way.

The last congressional election cycle in PA had 13 of 18 seats going to Republicans even though Democratic candidates won over 50% of the vote. I don't know how much better the second plan was to be honest with you. Anyway, congrats to her and best of luck (and thanks for serving).

PA. has NO law that regulates the creation of US House district boundaries. The Repubs who control the Legislature are free to gerrymander all they want, and they do, with no ability to legally challenge them. A certain Dem congressman even participated in the Republican process, to make his district safer.

Reforms were proposed in the PA. Legislature over the years to establish a more fair redistricting process, but they don't get out of committee.

The piano teacher was only able to be involved in the challenge of PA House and PA Senate districts. There was still gerrymandering, but it was not as bad.

But I wonder if the Dems actually won a plurality of the votes at the state house and senate level. I agree with your assessment. The last congressional election cycle I don't think any of the actual races were close (say within 5%). I wish all districts were drawn so that every race was competitive. Most of our state reps can stay on decades if they so choose. It breeds a sense of entitlement in my opinion.
