Repubs pick up Phila. seat in legislature by scheduling special election

http://www.politicspa.com/breaking-hd-170-white-wins-special-election/64709/

This is a favorite trick of the Republican leadership. They refuse to wait until a primary or regular election day to hold an election for an open seat in the Legislature. They schedule a special election day for only one office, which few people know about. They get their Republican activists to show up, and the Dem voters don't even know that an election is happening.

why don't the Democratic voters even know that there is an election?

That is a dirty way to do this, but the Dems are dropping the ball if they are not out there making this known. If the Republicans can get the word out to their supporters, so can the Dems.

And what is the deal with the unions supporting the Republican candidate?

I don't live in the district. However, there was an incredible lack of information about the election. I didn't see any mention of it until one post on facebook on election day.

The dem politicians were divided on this race, and the unions were very divided on this race, with many unions supporting the repub.

but we had better get our shit together and stop the infighting, because this state is in bad enough shape without even more Reps getting control.

And as far as the unions, that they will vote against their own survival is astonishing. I don't care what the Rep candidate says, when they get to Harrisburg, it is guaranteed that they will vote with the rest of the Reps.

I had a relative who voted in this election. She said the turnout was extremely low. Her number was in the 30s when she voted in the afternoon.

However, you couldn't drive an inch without seeing lawn signs. They were everywhere in the district. The police endorsed White. One union hall promoted Del Ricci. The hall next to it promoted White. Typically, the unions always back the dem.
