Baker: Husband’s firing payback from within Wolf administration

BY BOB KALINOWSKI
Published: February 13, 2016

State Sen. Lisa Baker on Friday claimed the abrupt firing of her husband from his high-ranking state job was ordered by Gov. Tom Wolf’s staff as political retribution against her.

The termination of Gary Baker — who was Northeast regional director of the Department of Community and Economic Development — came right after the Republican senator criticized the Democratic governor in a news release about his veto of funding for two rural hospitals in her district.

“I don’t think retaliation against a spouse is in order,” Lisa Baker said in a telephone interview. “I was elected to serve the people and be an advocate on their behalf.”

Lisa Baker, R-20, Lehman Township, said she initially couldn’t trace a link to Wolf’s office, but claimed she has done so in recent days.

Apparently, she is claiming that she criticized the governor for vetoing funding for two hospitals, and he is using his position to pay her back. That is clearly an abuse of power, and for what would seem to be an invidious reason. Since the administration refuses to comment on "personnel decisions," we have no evidence that Mr Baker was insufficient to his position, other than by implication due to his wife being a Republican.
