Wolf Administration announces Health, Human Services consolidation in state government

Gov. Tom Wolf has formally released his plan to consolidate the existing Departments of Aging, Drug and Alcohol Programs, Health and Human Services into one sprawling, super-department.

Monday's announcement did not speak to what levels of savings or staffing cuts, if any, would come along with the agency consolidation plan. It was expected to emphasize doing more with less.

This is a trend that is going around the state. And for what it's worth, I do see some merit in this, but not in it's current structure. It's one thing to consolidate Title XIX monies (medicaid) with programs that are funded with MA dollars, however, what this is doing would not only take these programs and place them under DHS (the old Public Welfare Dept) but also Lottery funded programs along with federal Title III (Older Americans Act) programs.

Seniors losing a Cabinet level position is going to greatly silence their voices.

We shouldn't let that happen.
