Nuclear waste transports from Canada to South Carolina site resume

Casks containing high-level liquid radioactive waste are being shipped again by tractor-trailer between Chalk River, Ont., and Aiken, S.C.

The controversial shipments began this spring after a federal court rejected several environmental groups' attempts to block them but stopped for a while after safety issues arose at the Savannah River Site processing plant that was receiving them.

The U.S. Department of Energy approved a safety evaluation in July, and the shipments started again, a citizens advisory board was informed Monday in South Carolina.

The waste contains radioactive isotopes left over from medical uses in Canada.
