Lindsey Graham: There's 'reason to believe' conversation was 'unmasked'

WASHINGTON — Sen. Lindsey Graham said that he has “reason to believe” that somebody in the government requested that a conversation he had with a foreign person be "unmasked."

“I’ve got information that suggests that I was incidentally collected. I don’t know if I was unmasked or not but I’ve sent a letter to the NSA, the FBI and the CIA requesting any collection of Lindsey Graham,” the South Carolina senator said Friday in an interview with Fox News' America's Newsroom. “Here’s the concern, did the people in the Obama administration listen in to these conversations? Was there politicizing of the intelligence gathering process?”

While it is illegal for the U.S. government to record its citizens, conversations that include Americans can be incidentally recorded if the government is monitoring a foreigner who is talking about or to an American. Usually the names of the individuals are blacked out, but officials can request the identity be "unmasked" if it is necessary for understanding of the intelligence.

Graham’s comments come as there is an increased focus on the number of leaks from the intelligence community.

Seriously though. So he was caught, like many others talking to someone with a FISA warrant. Pretty sure many of these same congress people pushed for the FISA court and the over-reaching Patriot Act post 911. No sympathy from me.

The unmasking was most likely because the conversation(s?) was about detailed government issues. The warrant seekers needed to be sure the person giving the information was okayed to do so in his/her government capacity. If it was determined to be some lower staff or contract hire with full detailed knowledge about the information discussed, there could be an internal problem. I am sure some under FISA warrant had legitimate reasons to have contact with our government as well as more nefarious reasons for other contacts. Isn't that to be expected from "spies".

No incidentally collected communication from the 2016 election is too small...

Nunes has apparently requested to un-mask them all...
