What's a history buff to do when the state flag looks wrong?

Longtime South Carolina political consultant Scott Malyerck last week launched a Facebook page — PickSCFlag — trying to drum up support for his effort to get the right Palmetto tree depicted on the state flag.

Malyreck noticed the difference in government flags flying in Columbia recently. As he tells it, the look has gone from the traditional "thinner trunk with a wider array of branches," to the new one being "more compact at the top and a thicker bottom."

"Am I the only one who noticed we have a different tree on every flag?" he said.
