Man alleges he was refused haircut because of his race

A Nacogdoches man alleges that his civil rights were violated on June 19 by a barber who refused to cut his hair because he is black.

Scotty Riggans, 35, filed a lawsuit on July 30 in U.S. District Court against James Arriola, owner of Arriola Barber Shop on Lake Street in Nacogdoches.

Riggans, an assistant principal at Nacogdoches High School, walked into the barber shop on June 19 and asked for a haircut, according to the lawsuit. Arriola allegedly denied his request.

"Defendant Arriola told Plaintiff Riggans that if he cut his hair, he would lose customers," according to the lawsuit. "Defendant Arriola went on to tell Plaintiff Riggans that if his customers saw Plaintiff Riggans in his chair, he would lose them.

The barber says that Riggans was also pushing Juneteenth. [/font]

African hair trimmings, although one wonders how they could tell the difference between it and the trimmings from Hispanics with a strong Afro heritage.

However, he might discover that his customer base would increase once the bigots were gone. It involves risk, of course, but I know it's a risk I've been willing to take.

I would love to see bigots with no place to go.

That barber would have had a really tough time of it. I know the town pretty well. While not Krazy-Klan like Vidor or Kountze, the red runs really deep there.

He find a barber that knows how to cut his hair type before letting anyone butcher it. I am assuming that his hair might be curly or tight.

Frickin Nacodoches.

He called the place "sack of roaches".

I've never been there, but I visited Lufkin and San Augustine about 13 years ago. I thought it was a beautiful area, but I also didn't talk with any of the locals.
