Cornyn slams new head of Homeland Security nominee

Sen. John Cornyn said someone with more knowledge of the United States’ southern border should take on the role of Secretary of Homeland Security and was critical of the nomination of Jeh Johnson, a former Pentagon Lawyer.

Because Texas represents the largest portion of the southern border, Cornyn argued that President Barack Obama should have nominated someone who knows, “the unique dynamics” of the area.

Cornyn also mentioned the Department of Homeland Security’s failure to secure the southern border, an area where he claims there has been an increase in violence, illegal crossing and drug trafficking.

“President Obama has tapped one of his former New York fundraisers,” Cornyn said, referring to Johnson. “We need someone who knows how to secure the border, not dial for dollars.”
