Texas business groups ally to counter tea party influence in GOP primaries

AUSTIN — Some of Texas’ biggest business trade groups are moving to counter tea party and anti-government forces that have dominated recent Republican primaries.

The Texas Future Business Alliance — a mix of 10 major business groups, including the chemical industry, bankers, builders and contractors — is sending out mailers and providing other support on behalf of GOP candidates who have supported water infrastructure development, highway construction and education spending.

Many of the incumbents have been pilloried as big government spenders and liberals by fiscal hawk groups.

The movement mirrors the schism happening nationally between hard right and establishment Republicans. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce recently pledged $50 million to back pro-business Republicans in U.S. Senate primaries and fight tea party insurgents. Republican leaders, such as House Speaker John Boehner, have castigated hard right groups, accusing them of wanting contributions more than solutions.

Got hung up on the first one as soon as I answered I was a Democrat. Been claiming to be a Republican ever since. A Republican who doesn't support the tea party but favors Steve Stockman over John Cornyn.

Heh.

I'll admit that I've also tried to place myself into the planted audience member on some of those Republican marketing phone calls.

Unfortunately, what's left of the Republicans will be even more beholden to the corporate and Wall St. interests.

I think that the Republicans will be jumping out of the frying pan into the fire. Americans are fed up with these interests and will continue to move left as the Republicans are held to the right.

I ended seeing while I was channel surfing. The panel was in unified in believing that the tea party was not going to form a new third party because the tea party hates Democrats more than they hate RINOs. I hope that this panel is wrong but I fear that we are stuck with the tea party for a while.

It will be fun to see if this group has any effect. For example, I have a strong feeling that David Dewhurst will be defeated by Dan Patrick even though Patrick is the weaker general election candidate
